Why a Jack?
Jacks come in all shapes and sizes, since early on in their breeding, the emphasis was hunting and field ability over looks and conformation. Short-legged, sometimes called English Jack Russell Terriers, emerged when hunters needed this type of build for hunting, slower and feistier. The longer-legged J.R.T is considered more representative of the breed standard by both the A.K.C and J.R.T.C.A, whereas the English Jack Russell Terrier Club Alliance (E.J.R.T.C.A) prefers the short legged Jack. Be aware, that Jack Russell Terriers were selected to be speedy, inquisitive, dig to access their prey and bark at the fox. They were not bred to be lapdogs, although when their mood dictates, some can be temporarily so. It is true they have a lot of energy, and all that energy must be challenged in some positive pursuit. Intelligence and tenacity, plus a highly developed independent nature can prove a challenge for many people. Therefore J.R.T's are definitely not for everyone. They must be obedience Trained and must have a consistent owner, who will not let their cuteness over-ride their need for a strong leader. At the end, consider not just the purchase price of a puppy and providing both high quality food, regular vet visits. These expenses are a constant, so be prepared. |
Jack Russells are athletic, smart, courageous and tenacious. Born and bred to hunt, they have an inherent urge to explore and follow up on the exploration by hunting whatever was discovered.
